Zack Nathanson is a Los Angeles–based ceramic artist working between pottery and sculpture.

Originally from the Boston area, I hold a BFA from Pratt Institute. My work draws from modernist and brutalist architecture, graphic and industrial design, and craft traditions, combining hand-built construction with a focus on structure, typography, and surface. I often incorporate text directly into vessels, treating language as an architectural element that shapes form, proportion, and visual rhythm. Words are chosen for their tone, cadence, humor, and letterforms, creating a tension between language as meaning and language as image.

Working across mid-range and high-fire processes, I build with groggy clay slabs and coils while developing custom glazes that emphasize color, texture, and variation. My practice explores how language and contemporary design systems can be translated into ceramic form while remaining rooted in the long tradition of vessel-making.
